Bob
K and Eileen live in New Jersey, USA. He was 58 when he was diagnosed in 1994.
His initial PSA was 20.0 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 5 and he was staged T2.
His choice of treatment was Lifestyle Changes. Here is his story.
I was
diagnosed fifteen years ago in 1994, at age 58, with a PSA of 20.0 and a Gleason
Score of 5. I went ballistic and thought that was the end of my life which was
not discouraged by my urologist. After many "second opinions" and much study on
the various treatments available, at the time, I decided that I would opt for
life changes rather than any conventional treatment. I had a doctor who would
work with me.
I gave up smoking (after 40 years), changed my diet to less
red meat (small portion once per week), started an exercise regimen working up
to 4 miles a day and 7-10 miles on weekends and extensive use of vitamins, herbs,
Flor-Essence Tea. and a lot of prayer.
My PSA has continued to rise gradually
over the last 15 years and I have had to eliminate my running, after 10 years,
due to an injury. Aside from urgency and frequency of urination I feel pretty
good. There has been some blood in my urine at times but that has diminished along
with the burning I get when I am dehydrated. Bone scans have been good as well
as blood tests except for the increasing PSA. The only drug I am using is Flomax.
There
is life after diagnosis and I would recommend any man with a new diagnosis to
take the time to study the various options open to him before making a decision.
There are certainly more options today and there will be even more in the very
near future.
