GOLD

Howard Cohen and Barbara live in California, USA. He was 53 when he was diagnosed in July 1999. His initial PSA was 5.4 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 3+3 and he was staged T1c. His choice of treatment was Alternative - human breast milk. Here is his story.

The very short version is that, while researching medical options (RP, XRays, etc.) we found research coming out of Lund University in Sweden which showed that, in the test tube, human mothers' milk had a factor that killed cancer cells of all varieties but left normal cells unaffected.**1 We found a donor, a cancer survivor nursing a 6 month old, and I started taking her pumped milk. In one month, my PSA came down to 1.9. At that point I cancelled scheduled medical intervention and began an aggressive active surveillance program, using monthly PSA measurements, twice annual MRSI imaging, and occasional power doppler ultrasounds.

After a few years, my cancer was no longer visible on imaging and, for the most part, my PSA fluctuated around 2.2 or so (with a few episodes of asymptomatic prostatitis kicking it up erratically temporarily).

I am now out 10 years from my initial biopsy confirmed diagnosis and still symptom free and continuing my use of mothers' milk as a prophylactic measure.

Note 1: Howard was not aware, until I pointed it out to him that breast milk has a PSA reading that can be very high indeed, with readings of between 0.47 and 100 being reported in the milk of lactating women. Breast tumours can also produce high PSA readings. A study in 1998 suggested that patients with breast tumors positive for PSA may have better prognosis compared to those with PSA-negative breast tumors [Clin Cancer Res. 1998 Jun;4(6):1489-97 Prognostic value of prostate-specific antigen for women with breast cancer: a large United States cohort study.
