John
Jonas lives in Pennsylvania USA. He was 49 when he was diagnosed on November 30,
2009. His initial PSA was 1.99 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6 (3+3) and although
he does not state his staging it seems likely he was staged T1c. He is undecided
as to his choice of treatment. Here is his story.
I was just newly diagnosed
last Monday, November 30, 2009. I talked to the staff at my urologist's office
and was given the news over the phone - you have prostate cancer with a Gleason
score of 6 (3+3). Wow, what a shock. Four days later, I am still in shock - can't
eat, sleep, interact with family, can barely go to work.
In addition,
my wife was diagnosed with lymphoma 4.5 years ago. The disease relapsed last year
and was present in the central nervous system. She was given a very poor prognosis
in early October 2009 - just 2 months ago. Still reeling form that news, now it
is me. I have been her caregiver for the entire time of her illness. Meanwhile
trying to keep up with my career and raise four children.
I am 49 years
old with an excellent health history. I have always maintained a healthy diet,
maintained a perfect body weight, never smoked nor do I drink. This all doesn't
make sense to me. Right now the emotions are running high. Given the time of year
and now this latest news, I know I can't handle anymore.
It is my hope
that by joining this group I am able to weed through the jungle that exists out
there about this most devastating news. I want to find treatment that is the least
invasive with the fewest side effects. Perhaps such an option does not exist.
