BRONZE

Eric T and Mary live in Wisconsin USA . He was 58 when he was diagnosed on February 18, 2008. His initial PSA was 4.13 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6 and although he does not state his staging it seems likely that he was staged T1c. He is undecided as to his choice of treatment. Here is his story.

My first elevated PSA test was 4.25 and the follow-up I requested was 4.13. My brother and cousin both were diagnosed at about my same age so I decided on a biopsy.

My doctor phoned me this morning with my results. Of the 12 samples, 3 on each side showed involved tissue and my Gleason score is 6. I do not yet know the 2 numbers of which it is comprised but will call tomorrow and find out. I have been researching on the web since my first over 4.0 PSA results and so far am leaning toward the Da Vinci robotic surgery, but I am open to all options.

UPDATED

March 2009

After much research, reading and consultations with two excellent doctors, my wife and I have decided to go with Da Vinci robotic surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Our decision came down to deciding that - (according to the Sloan Kettering nomogram) - we would go with the option that shows the highest % of survival and non-recurrence for my specific cancer. Others should make decisions based on their own discovery and research - ours is just one couple's decision. My condition has an added complication that few men will have - I have a resurfaced hip joint. That large piece of chromium cobalt makes options that might be good for others more risky for me.

I appreciate any support and am grateful for many kind words I have received. But PLEASE do not email me with suggestions that one option is much better or to be sure to consider X or Y treatment - we have already done so.

There are no perfect solutions and we all must make our decisions based on our own selves.
